How to play GutGuesser

GutGuesser is a daily estimation game. Every day there are four questions whose answer is a number —how much a whale weighs, how many bones a baby has, how many seconds the breath-holding record is— and nobody knows it for sure. Whoever gets closest wins.

How to play

How scoring works

Each question is worth up to 1,000 points. What counts is not how many units you were off, but how many times: saying 200 when it's 100 is off by double, and so is saying 50. That's why the ruler is logarithmic, and why the same game can ask about the weight of an ant or of a mountain.

Nail it and you get 1,000. Off by ten times either way and you get zero. Anything in between scores by how close you are. At the end you see your rank against everyone who played that day.

Why it works

It isn't a trivia game, it's a reasoning game: nobody has seen a year's worth of pasta, but everyone has seen a plate, and you can multiply from there. Every question is chosen so you can picture the thing and reach the right order of magnitude without knowing the figure. Questions you can only answer by already knowing them get removed.

Where the numbers come from

Every answer has a source: scientific bodies, museums, manufacturers, official records. If a number changes —a record gets broken— it's corrected. You can browse every question already played in past days: 40 of them so far.

With friends and leagues

When you finish you can send the challenge to anyone and compare. With an account you keep your streak, add friends and create private leagues: three questions a day just for you and a weekly leaderboard.

No sign-up needed

You can play without an account. If you make one we don't ask for your email or phone: a code or Google sign-in is enough. What we store is explained in privacy.
